Dalyan boat tours: what you see, and which boat to take
Rock tombs, İztuzu, the mud baths and — if the tour goes that far — Köyceğiz lake. Every boat shows you roughly the same river. The difference is how many people are on it with you.
A day on the Dalyan river is the thing almost everyone who comes here ends up doing, and the thing almost everyone remembers afterwards. The reed channels are narrow enough that the boat feels like it is threading through them. You come round a bend and the rock tombs are simply there, above you, where they have been for two thousand years.
What follows is what the boats actually stop at, then the part most guides skip: which kind of boat suits which kind of day, and when it is worth booking before you arrive.
What the boats stop at
The Lycian rock tombs
Carved into the cliff face across from town — the burial places of the kings and nobles of ancient Kaunos. Nearly every boat slows or stops here, and the light is best in the late afternoon when the stone goes warm. If you want them without a boat, the terraces along the water in Maraş look straight at them.
İztuzu beach
Turtle Beach: four and a half kilometres of sand between the river mouth and the sea, and a loggerhead nesting ground long before it was a beach. Boats drop you for a few hours of swimming. The mud baths and thermal springs
It sounds ridiculous and it is the part people photograph most. You cover yourself in grey mud, stand in the sun until it cracks, wash it off in the sulphur pool and come out slightly smug about your skin. The Sultaniye springs nearby are hotter and quieter.
The reed channels
The stretch between town and the sea is a maze of reeds and shallow water, and it is full of birds — herons, egrets, the occasional kingfisher going past like a thrown stone. Sit at the back of the boat and watch the water rather than the phone.
Köyceğiz lake
Only some tours go this far upriver. The lake opens out wide and still with the mountains behind it, and it is usually the calmest part of the day — a swim stop, or lunch, or nothing at all.
Which boat suits which day
The stops are broadly the same. What changes is the number of people, whether the boat waits for you, and how much of the day you control.

Booking at the jetty, honestly
Most people arrange a group boat at the jetty the evening before, or through their hotel, and that genuinely works. It is how it has always been done here, the price is fair, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
Where it stops working is high season. Through July and August the group boats fill and the decks get crowded — pleasant enough if you expected it, less so if you pictured a quiet river. And private boats are the first thing to go: in August, walking down to the jetty the night before and asking for a private captain tomorrow will usually get you a shrug.
So: group boat in June or September, sort it locally and enjoy yourself. Private boat, a fixed date, a hotel pick-up, or anything in high season — book it before you fly.

The river after dark is a different place — no other boats, the tombs lit from below, dinner on board and the water completely still. There is a moonlight cruise that includes the mud bath and a barbecue, with pick-up from Dalyan hotels.
One thing worth knowing before you book it: the hotel pick-up is one way only. Work out how you are getting back before you go, especially if you are staying out towards Metinler.

Small things that make the day better
- Go early or go late. Mornings and late afternoons have the kinder sun and the better light. Midday on the water is fierce.
- Bring more water than you think. And a hat. There is shade on most boats but not much of it.
- Take clothes you do not mind ruining if the mud baths are on the route. The grey does not always come out.
- Sit at the back. Better view, less engine noise, and you can watch the reeds go past.
- Ask the captain about Kaunos and Byblis. The old story belongs to this river, and most of them tell it better than any guidebook.
Every rock and river bend here seems to have a story attached to it, and the captains know them all.
