Car hire at Dalaman airport

Dalaman airport is 25 minutes from Dalyan. That short drive is why most people book a transfer and stop thinking about it — and for a lot of visitors that is the right call. This page is for working out whether you are one of them, and what a hire car actually costs once the deposit and the insurance are on the table.

Do you actually need a car?

Dalyan itself is walkable. The town centre, the restaurants along the river, the boat jetty and the market are all within about fifteen minutes on foot of each other. If your plan is river boats, mud baths, İztuzu by boat and long dinners, you can spend a week here and never miss a car.

A car earns its cost when you want the things around Dalyan rather than Dalyan itself:

If none of that is on your list, book a transfer, save the deposit hold on your credit card, and skip the rest of this page. We would rather you had a good week than a booking.

Car, transfer or dolmuş?

OptionWhen it winsRough cost
TransferOne trip each way, late-night arrival, no interest in driving€25–30 one way
Hire carMore than two days of exploring, families, flexible plans€35–55/day + insurance
DolmuşBudget, the Dalyan–Ortaca–Köyceğiz line, no rush€1–2 per journey

Dolmuş is genuinely useful for Ortaca and Köyceğiz, but it does not go where the good stuff is, and the last one back is earlier than you think.

Prices below are live. Dates matter more than you would expect in July and August — the cheap categories go first.

What actually costs money

Deposit

The rental company blocks an amount on your credit card until you bring the car back. It is a hold, not a charge, but it needs headroom on the card and it needs to be a credit card in the main driver's name — a debit card is often refused.

Full coverage

The cheap headline price almost never includes the excess waiver. Buying full coverage through the comparison site is usually cheaper than at the desk, and it is the difference between a scratch costing you nothing and costing you the deposit.

Fuel policy

Full-to-full is the one to look for: you get it full, you bring it back full. Anything else usually means paying for fuel you do not use.

Automatics

Most of the fleet in this part of Turkey is manual. If you need an automatic, book early — in August the automatics are gone well before the manuals.

Driving around Dalyan

The road from Dalaman airport to Dalyan is straightforward — dual carriageway most of the way, then a turn-off and a quiet road into town.

Common questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

EU licences are accepted in Turkey without an IDP. Check your own country's official guidance before travelling — the rules can vary.

Can I pay with a debit card?

For the deposit, usually not. Most suppliers require a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold.

Is it safe to drive around Dalyan?

The roads are good and traffic is calm. The two things to watch are unlit village roads after dark and scooter traffic on summer evenings in town.

How far is Dalaman airport from Dalyan?

About 30 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Book in advance or at the airport?

In summer, in advance. What is left at the desk in July and August is thin and expensive.

What if my flight is delayed?

Put your flight number on the booking — most suppliers track it and adjust pick-up accordingly.
